trip introduction

Tamang heritage trekking trail Lies north of the Kathmandu Valley. this is the most accessible trekking region in Nepal. Here, you can meet some of the most beautiful scenery terraced green farmland, thick forests, and the peaks of the Langtang Himalayas, close to the Tibetan border. The area is famous for its beautiful cedar forests and flowers and jaw-dropping views of soaring Himalayan peaks. Including the mighty Shishapangma which is one of the 8000-meter peaks, Manaslu Massif, Ganesh, Langtang, and Jugal Himal. Langtang is often described as the most beautiful valley in the world. And our trip includes an amazing initial few days reaching the valley via the Tamang Heritage Trail.

The Tamang Heritage Trail is quieter than the better-known Langtang Valley section of our trek, meaning you’ll meet far fewer people. During the initial few days on the Tamang trail, the infrastructure isn’t as well established as in the main valley or in the Annapurna or Khumbu regions. Still, if you want an authentic experience with raw natural beauty whilst spending time with the local communities, then this trek is the perfect blend of both old and new and the adventure for you!

Tamang Heritage, Tamang people came from Tibet as horse traders and settled in hilly parts of Nepal (usually within close proximity of the Kathmandu Valley) several hundred years ago. Additionally. They have retained a distinct identity with Tibetan roots, as well as their own language. however, they have historically been one of the most marginalized ethnic groups in Nepal.  trekking the Tamang Heritage Trail helps bring a source of income to the Tamang people in this area.

Getting away to Tamang heritage trek trail

The only way to start of this trek is to drive overland from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi. The trail from  Syabrubesi passes through Goljung, Gatlang, Thuman, Timure, Briddim, Lama Hotel, Langtang valley, and Kyangjin Gompa.  Gatlang village and Langtang are traditional Tamang villages culminating in cultural features. The visit to the beautiful local Tamang monastery and the holy Parvatikunda Lake at Gatlang adds exhilaration to your trekking. The Tamang Heritage Trail in Langtang National Park. You do not require any permits but the checkpoint at Dunche might insist that you pay the National Park entry fee of 30$. The Tamang Heritage Trail was affected by the 2015 earthquakes but is now fully reconstructed. Homestays and teahouses offer accommodation and meals in every community.

As soon as you leave Kathmandu, the road rises and crosses a small pass at Kakani, 2145 meters above sea level. On a clear day, the panorama is superb: Annapurna II, Manaslu, the Ganesh Himal massif. The road then plunges towards the wide valley of the Trisuli to arrive at the large town of Trisuli (548 m). Then it’s the track to Shyabur Besi. In Kalikhastan, we enter the Langtang National Park.

Rough climb for this first day of warm-up. Gatlang is one of the first Tamang villages visited on our route.

Gatlang is mainly made up of the Tamang ethnic group, a people of Tibeto-Mongolian origin with their own language and culture. Along the way, it is not uncommon to see men and women in traditional costumes. After a descent through the terraced crops, we go up on the other side of the valley to reach Tatopani (“hot water” in Nepali). Splendid view of the Ganesh Himal chain, in particular the Paldor (5930 m).

If you wish, the possibility of taking a morning bath in the large hot water basins with the Nepalese. We continue our climb to the Nagthali pass (3165 m) before reaching the charming village of Thuman. Passing the pass, we leave behind the chain of Ganesh Himal to find ourselves facing that of Langtang. The summits of Langtang II (6560 m) and Langtang Lirung (7225 m) impose themselves on us for this day of walking.

At the bottom of the valley, we cross the road linking Lhasa to Khatmandu, subsidized by Beijing and this wanting the counterpart of that passing further east of Khatmandu. Fortunately, the traffic is less there. We follow the Bhote Koshi river before climbing again towards the village of Briddim, in the middle of terraced fields and orchards.

The classic Langtang Valley route starts 600 meters below! We take the opportunity to stay level by taking a shepherd’s path that takes us to the ridge leading to the sacred lakes of Gosainkunda, another magnificent trek in Langtang. After the village of Sherpagaon and a clear and open landscape, we descend gently towards the forest in the direction of Changtang, called Lama Hotel (name of the first lodge built in this hamlet).

We descend again and again and end up crossing the tumultuous Langtang Khola shortly before the village of Bamboo. We are at the bottom of the valley, in a curious forest of oaks, alders, and bamboos. Sometime later, we go up through a thick forest before leaving and having a first glimpse of our stage: the village of Thulo Shyabru, hanging on a ridge with its white chorten at the entrance of the village.

Return to the track with alternating coniferous forests and pastures. The last views of the Langtang and Ganesh Himal ranges follow one another before a long descent. Arrived at the road, a car awaits us to take us back to Kathmandu.
