Overview

The Chulu West Climbers require technical expertise and a certain level of physical fitness to climb the peak. The climbers will face steep slopes, icy glaciers, and challenging rock faces. These challenges can be overcome using the proper equipment such as ice, axes, and ropes. As you climb higher altitudes, the difficulty level of the expedition increases because of the low oxygen level. All the challenges are worth enough enough to take. The sense of accomplishment is achieved once the expedition is completed and the reward you get is the panoramic views of Annapurna region.

Usually, the Chulu West Peak Climbing takes about 16-20 days to complete the trek. However, the number of days needed for this peak climbing depends on the trekking seasons and the weather conditions. The climbers have enough rest days for the various acclimatization. You must be prepared for the unpredictable weather conditions of this region. As a result, 2-3 days are kept as a reserve day.

The biggest reward of the Chulu West Climbing is the panoramic views of the mountains. They can extend their trek by doing the round Annapurna Trek as well. After strolling through this magical place, there are a few kilometers left at the bottom of the valley (about an hour) to reach Manang, the last real village in the Marsyangdi valley. Today, our focus is on tidying up the base camp before we set off toward Thorong High camp. We retrace our steps along the trail leading to Letdar, then venture northward towards the challenging pass. For the success of our day, the departure in the direction of Thorung La is very early (between 3h30 and 5h of ascent) in order to reach the pass before 9h to enjoy the view and avoid a sometimes violent wind. The ascent is slow and regular; it's a good idea to take your time thinking about staying well hydrated. The sun rises and warms us while depositing superb lights on the 6000 meters which surround us... From the pass, the view is extraordinary on the massifs of Annapurnas, Chulu, and Daulaghiri, and on the desert foothills of Dolpo and Mustang. It is a great reward for the efforts made over several days… After admiring this exceptional panorama, a long descent (where the view continues to dazzle us) leads us to Muktinath, located at the gates of Mustang. The peaceful life of this still authentic village contrasts with the modern world located just 2 hours walk away... Trip Information

Chulu west Peak climbing Details

Your guide, from your arrival in Kathmandu until your departure, is responsible for the success of your trip and oversees your team. Do not hesitate to ask him questions, respect his position as the team leader, and above all follow his advice! Often your guide is the only English-speaking member of the team. In the mountains and, especially when during high-altitude travels, your guide is responsible for the safety of the group. The instructions he gives and the remarks he makes to all participants must be carefully followed. The interest and safety of the trekking group must be preserved, even when it may be to the detriment of an individual member of the group.

Your Nepalese Team may include several members, each with specific responsibilities:
  • The Guide Leader (Sirdar: is responsible for and leader of the whole team and is treated with respect by all. Often he has earned his position by starting as a porter and rising through the ranks.

  • The Cook: is responsible for all meals and is on a trek that doesn’t use lodges for meals. (camping trek )
  • The kitchen boy: is an assistant to the cook. ( camping trek )
  • The Assistant Guide: is actively helping clients under the leader’s direction and set camp.
  • The porter:  carries loads for the trekking group, essential in Nepal’s mountainous terrain where roads are limited. Regulations ensure a maximum weight limit and a minimum wage for their work. Porters are provided with proper gear based on the trekking route and are insured for alpine treks.

Porters receive a premium wage for carrying loads over 30 kg. Additionally, the Nepal Alpinist Club ensures that guides and porters have insurance. It is designed for beginners with some mountaineering experience who have completed similar or slightly easier routes

Preparation for the Chulu West Peak climbing
Preparing for the trek requires several months of preparation with 4 to 6-hour walks every weekend for stamina and participating in a sport that requires short periods of high exertion.

Medical check-up Before going Peak climbing
Being in good health is essential to enjoy your Alpinist Club trip fully. If your last medical visit was more than four years ago, please get another general physical exam and tell your doctor the nature of your trip (climate, altitude, difficulty, etc.). The altitude also has the effect of reviving dental problems or other chronic pain, so getting a dental checkup is also prudent. If you are undertaking a high-altitude expedition, we advise you to consult a mountain medicine specialist.

Acute Mountain Sickness
This trip takes place at high altitudes so some people may experience altitude-related discomforts like headaches, loss of appetite, and swelling of limbs. Most of these symptoms usually go away within a few days, but sometimes they can develop into a serious illness: pulmonary or cerebral edema. There are no preventive drugs for AMS. Diamox diuretic is often effective for symptomatic relief, but you should first check with your doctor to verify that it is not contraindicated for you. Think about it before you go.

Transfers/ Transport During Trip
All transfers are provided in private vehicles.

Group size for the chulu west Peak climbing
The group is composed of 1 to 10 participants maximum. The number of participants is voluntarily limited to allow a better immersion, to not embarrass our hosts, to develop spaces of freedom and to allow a great flexibility of operation. However, the maximum number can be exceeded in the case where the last person who registers wishes to travel with another or several other people. The services will not be modified and the conditions of the trip will be identical as a result.

Trip Map

The Chulu West can be done in two climbing seasons. The two seasons Spring(March-May) and  Autumn( September – November ) are favorable due to stable weather conditions, clear skies, and fewer climbers. Climbers with prior experience can go on the expedition during the winter seasons. There are many uncertainties such as unstable weather conditions, and challenges in route and only a few tea houses are available.

Yes, the guide is necessary for assistance in the entire expedition.  Whether you are a beginner or an experienced climber it is recommended to hire a guide. The route has crevasse and many challenges might occur during the climbing. The guides with years of experience and knowledge will handle the challenges for the successful completion of the expedition.

It would help if you prepared yourself mentally and physically before the expedition. To focus on endurance and strength, you can go for long-distance running ( 10-15 km ) three to four times a week. You can do cycling for at least 1 – 2 hours and hiking with a 10- 15 kg pack to build stamina. You can also opt for high-intensity workouts like CrossFit or kettlebell training that will help to improve overall fitness.  Meditation can be done to improve your mental wellbeing. You must be prepared well mentally to face all the challenges during the expedition.

It is one of the most challenging peaks to climb. The climbers must be physically fit to face all the challenges. As you ascend the higher altitude, it gets difficult to breathe, but proper acclimatization, hydration, and nutrition help can happen. The summit day is the most challenging day yet the most rewarding day.

Our itinerary is designed with proper acclimatization. The guide will make sure to move ahead slowly, hydrate, get enough sleep, and eat a proper diet. A medicine like Diamox can help us. As soon as you notice any kind of symptoms, you need to inform the guide and they will make the best decision there for you.

You must bring all necessary mountaineering gear and supplies. Equipment such as trekking poles, boots, crampons, an ice axe, a climbing rope, and a helmet. It's essential to pack warm clothes such as a down jacket, a sleeping bag suitable for icy conditions, gloves, and gaiters.

Yes, you can rent or buy all the climbing equipment. We can suggest to you the store that provides the best climbing equipment.

The foods are prepared in the tea houses and at the time of climbing food is prepared at the kitchen tents arranged by our team members. The meal will be prepared by our cook. We will also carry dried meals to provide you the options in case you don’t want to have cooked foods.

We never know what might happen while climbing the expedition. It is always good to have insurance to minimize the risks. We recommend you to have insurance for the expedition. The final emergency option is our helicopter evacuation, it is the only means of transportation in the Everest region. You need to pay by yourself for the evacuation.

Once you have conquered this Chulu West, there are several 6,000 m and above peaks to aim for. You can climb Chulu East Peak, Larkya Peak, Dhampus Peak Kyajo Ri Peak, etc.
