Nepal Allows Trekking Permits for Solo Trekkers in Restricted Areas

"The Department of Immigration Nepal now offers a paperless, online system for restricted area trekking permits, making it easier, faster, and safer for foreign trekkers in Nepal’s 13 restricted districts."

The Department of Immigration Nepal, under the Ministry of Home Affairs Nepal, has introduced an important update regarding trekking permits for Nepal’s restricted regions. This new policy aims to simplify the permit process while promoting tourism and ensuring the safety of trekkers.

Foreign nationals who wish to trek in the restricted areas of 13 districts in Nepal must obtain a special trekking permit issued by the Department of Immigration. To improve efficiency and transparency, the permit application process has now been made online, paperless, faster, and more transparent. This digital system makes it easier for trekking agencies to process permits for international trekkers traveling in restricted areas.

New Rule: Solo Trekkers Can Now Get Permits

Previously, trekking permits for restricted areas were issued only for groups, and solo trekkers were not allowed to obtain permits. This policy created challenges for many independent travelers and was also seen as limiting Nepal’s tourism potential.

After receiving feedback and concerns from tourism organizations such as the Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN), the government reviewed the rule. As a result, starting 21 March 2026, trekking permits can now be issued even for a single trekker.

Conditions for Solo Trekking in Restricted Areas

Although solo trekkers are now allowed to obtain permits, several important conditions must still be followed:

  • The trekking permit application must be submitted through a registered trekking agency.
  • The trekker must be accompanied by a licensed trekking guide.
  • In case of emergencies, the trekking agency will be responsible for rescue operations.
  • According to current regulations, one trekking guide can manage up to seven trekkers in a group.

Supporting Nepal’s Tourism Industry

This new decision is expected to strengthen Nepal’s tourism sector by making trekking permits more accessible while maintaining safety standards. The policy will help promote trekking in remote regions, create local employment opportunities, and provide better support for trekkers exploring Nepal’s unique Himalayan landscapes.
