Prior Skills and training required to Climb Ama Dablam

Ama Dablam is one of the challenging climbs that demands experience and determination to complete the summit.  In order to prepare for this climb, a climber needs to focus on endurance, core, and strength training.  This core strength will help the climber handle the vertical strength of the ‘ yellow tower’  on the way to Camp 2.  Long-distance running, cycling, and hiking with added weight will be effective training for the climb. It is advisable for the climber to start the training before 12 weeks of climbing departure.

Technical skills such as rope climbing and proper use of gear can be learned from the advanced mountaineering classes. Climbers must be comfortable climbing high pitch and also be familiar with mixed climbing. It is advisable to learn ice climbing up to WI-3 or WI-4 for spring climbs. Climbers should be fully prepared for the long descent coming down from the summit. It is the place where most of the accidents take place.  Ama Dablam's expedition is not a cup of tea. It requires a lot of training and skills for successful completion.

Yellow Tower and Camp 2

The yellow tower is located at the southwest ridge of Ama Dablam region which is approximately 6,000 meters.  It is a gateway to Camp 2 and the upper mountain region for all the climbers. This yellow tower is a straight 80- 90 degree vertical wall that is quite difficult to climb.  Climbers might face challenges with the heavy loads in this section. With the proper training and guidance a climbers would overcome this challenge and enter camp 2.

Routes and Difficult section

Ama Dablam is regarded as the TD/ 5 in terms of difficulty level . Climbers will use the Southwest Ridge section route of the mountain.  The expedition requires steep vertical mixed climbing on rock, ice, and snow. You must be physically and mentally fit.  Climbers who have prior experience will have easiness in climbing. However, those who don’t have experience must train themselves physically and mentally before starting the adventure. As mentioned earlier, the entire climb from Camp 1 to Summit is done through rope. The climber must be fully aware of the difficulty level of this expedition.

Trekking and mountaineering clothes, gears and boots

Besides your physical health, proper gear, clothes, and boots play a vital role in the expedition. You should be ready to invest in good quality gear and clothing. You will be highly dependent on the clothes as it will help you to keep warm in night when the temperature drops down.

Climbers must carry hydration bottles and filtration tablets as you go higher the availability of water is lesser.  Our guide will make sure to provide water as much as possible. They will boil snow at higher levels of the summit.  There are few tea houses available where we can have our meals. We will also provide a packed meal.
